The Entrepreneur
Roy Boverhof Founder · Technical Leader · Builder of Companies
Three companies founded, one enterprise client that became an 18-year partnership, and multiple products shipped from prototype to revenue. I spot the gap, build the proof, and scale it.
The Entrepreneurial Path
Same pattern, every time: spot the gap, build the prototype, prove it works, ship it or hand it off. Repeat.
Co-founded Renaissance IT at 19. Started Fury Media at 21. Founded ServerBiz at 27, growing it from web hosting into a full-service internet company. Elsevier became the largest client, and that relationship is still going nearly two decades on.
That entrepreneurial wiring hasn't changed. Today it shows up as agentic AI engineering: building and modernising entire web applications through AI-assisted workflows. Small teams (or even solo builders) punching far above their weight. Recently modernised a production app with thousands of users in a weekend.
Track Record
- Wilgraaghebben.nl, thousands of users, live for nearly 20 years
- Modernised that same app from Bootstrap 2 to 5 in a weekend with agentic AI
- Landed Elsevier as a client via ServerBiz, partnership ongoing for 18+ years
- Three companies founded before age 30

Roy Boverhof International Rankings Strategy · Technical Leadership · Data Intelligence
Built and delivered the bibliometric data products feeding Times Higher Education's WUR and Impact Rankings, two of the league tables universities use for strategic positioning. Conceived the SciVal Rankings module along the way. Now Product Lead for Rankings Engagement & Analytics at Elsevier: day-to-day with THE and QS, hands-on with the pipelines, and leading AI fluency across the analytics team.
The Architect's Path
Joined Elsevier as a full-stack engineer via my company ServerBiz, building prototypes for ScienceDirect and Scopus. Moved into a leadership role defining data strategy and technical direction for the bibliometric platforms behind the world's most-watched university rankings.
THE World University Rankings. QS. Clients across Europe, Japan, and the rest of world. Along the way, identified a monetisable gap in ranking analysis and pitched the SciVal Rankings module. Elsevier built a product team around it while I architected the data pipeline and guided development. It now drives subscriptions and reduces churn.
From August 2025, shifted to Product Lead for Rankings Engagement & Analytics. Day-to-day on data and metrics with THE and QS, hands-on with PySpark on Databricks, and leading the technical direction for a new analytics dashboarding platform plus the internal AI tooling that sits alongside it.

Roy Boverhof Hands-On Technical Leader · Agentic Engineering · Still Shipping
Most leaders my seniority have drifted from the code. I never did. Twenty years of full-stack shipping plus agentic AI compounds into the kind of player-coach leverage that compresses quarter-long initiatives into long weekends with green test suites at the end.
The Player-Coach
Full-stack across Python, PHP/Laravel, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Vue, and the infrastructure underneath. What separates me from most senior leaders my age is that I never let the code drift out of reach. I still write it, still ship it, and review every diff my agents produce.
Agentic AI changed what a single hands-on leader can do. I architect with one hand and orchestrate parallel agent workstreams with the other. Scoped specs go in, reviewable diffs come back. The point is to lead and build at the same time, and let the multiplier compound. The same logic powered three companies and 18 years of data platforms behind the world's top university rankings.
The obsession that chased sub-2-minute laps in a BMW M3 at Zandvoort now shows up in data pipelines, deploy scripts, and Home Assistant. The track is gone. The wiring is not.

How I Work With AI Agents
The difference between using agents and building with them.
The Stack
- Claude Code and OpenAI Codex CLI for interactive coding agents, run from VS Code.
- AWS Bedrock for direct model invocation from code. Workflows where the model is the decision-maker, not just the autocomplete.
- Markdown rules and tool-binding as the orchestration layer. Declarative specs constrain agent behavior; tools bridge model output to deterministic side-effects.
The Pattern
- Fan-out, not serialize. Four scoped agent workstreams in parallel beats one big "modernize the frontend" prompt every time.
- Test net before destructive change. Grow the suite first. Swap the engine second.
- Review every diff. Senior judgement is the bottleneck I have not delegated, and will not.
Leverage in Practice
Four recent stories of what player-coach plus agentic AI actually produces.
The Bootstrap 2-to-5 Weekend
Feb 25 to Mar 1, 202650 commits in 5 calendar days. 30+ templates migrated. 43 Playwright tests still green at the end.
One commit swapped Bootstrap 2.0.4 to 5.3.3 and jQuery 1.7.2 to 3.7.1 across 58 files in a single change. Adjacent work landed in parallel: cookie consent banner, GA4, drag-and-drop wish reordering, ARIA pass, Open Graph extractor, DB migration mechanism, and a Playwright suite grown from 36 to 103 tests in the same weekend. Production app on Wilgraaghebben.nl, thousands of users, multi-domain deployment.
The IC version of me without AI would have done this carefully over a month. The manager version of me without hands-on skill would have scoped it as a quarter-long initiative for two engineers. The combination compressed it into a long weekend with a green test suite at the end.
Provider-Neutral Agentic Framework
InternalArchitected a framework that centralizes reusable agentic capabilities, prompts, workflows, hooks, integrations, and validation in a shared core, then renders platform-specific packages for multiple coding-agent runtimes. Byte-for-byte parity validation against an existing production runtime makes migration from a legacy single-provider architecture to an extensible multi-agent platform safe and reviewable.
Catching the Agent Mid-Analysis
Domain DepthWorking on a university rankings analysis, I caught my agent using both country-normalized and raw bibliometric data even though both comparators were from the same country. The normalization added no value and was steering the analysis the wrong way. A non-bibliometrician using the same agent would have shipped the output. Hands-on plus domain depth is what catches this.
Greenfield Club App, Agentic Build
Oct 2025 to Apr 2026213 commits, 41 active days, 489 passing tests, +95,752 lines on a Laravel 12 + Vue 3 + Inertia stack.
Greenfield management app for a running club in Lansingerland: event scheduling, public registration with QR tickets and an in-browser scanner, news/CMS, admin approval flow with a 4-tier role hierarchy, full EN/NL i18n, and a PWA layer. Built using Laravel Boost MCP and a three-agent loop (development, testing, orchestration) wired in on days 6 and 12. Single commits routinely closed whole phases: 118 files in one i18n pass, 39 files for the public event system, a 57-file role-hierarchy refactor inside a 26-commit day. Live at Runnerts.nl.
The IC version of me without AI would have nibbled at this for six months of evenings. The manager version of me without hands-on skill would have scoped it as a year-long contract for two engineers, a designer, and a PM. The combination shipped it in 41 active days, with a 489-test suite green at the end.
Side Projects and Open Source
The "still shipping" part, in public.
Bender
Automated crypto trading bot for Bitvavo. RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, paper trading, multi-market portfolio management. Python.
ORCID Plugin
WordPress plugin for ORCID integration with real-time API validation. Open source.
Beyond Code
The builder mindset doesn't clock out. It just finds new materials.
Running
Regular interval training with Runnerts.nl, a running community in Lansingerland that I also built the website and management tool for. Because if you're going to join something, you might as well build the infrastructure too.
Car Racing
KNAF-licensed racing driver. Competed with a BMW E46 M3 at Circuit Zandvoort, clocking sub-2-minute lap times. The same obsession with precision that drives the code drives the race line.
Home Automation
Fully automated home using Home Assistant: lighting, heating, cooling, security, connected devices. Built a custom dashboard on an ESP32 with a built-in screen so my 10-year-old can control his own room. If it has an API, it's getting integrated.
